EarthMix-Prairie has been developed to replicate the naturally diverse soils found across the world’s prairies. These soils naturally consist of a mix of organics, clays and minerals that support live custodian use and promote plant growth while enriching animals that originate from these areas. Combine EarthMix-Prairie with leaf litter layers, live plants, and grasses to further increase animal enrichment and create a naturalistic environment.
Many reptile species commonly kept in captivity originate from the North American prairies. Providing a substrate tailored to these environments can aid with positive naturalism. EarthMix-Prairie is also suitable for a wide range of other scrubland reptile and amphibian species, making it a versatile and effective choice for naturalistic and Bio-Active enclosures.
Arcadia Reptile EarthPro-EarthMix-Prairie helps to supply many of the core minerals that reptiles naturally assimilate in the wild through feeding and digging (natural geophagy). When suitably hydrated, it will support tunnel and burrow formation, can be used for egg-laying sites, and can help enrichment through natural body movement, offering natural resistance to the feet and limbs during movement.
EarthMix-Prairie is the only choice for keepers wishing to maintain animals Bio-Actively and/or naturalistically. It is a clean, safe-to-use, mineral-rich, well-draining, Bio-Active-ready substrate that contains no non-natural particles which could lead to impaction. Carefully balanced ratios of minerals and organics help to support the vital custodian species used in Bio-Active systems.
EarthMix-Prairie can be considered fully Bio-Active ready, allowing custodian species to be added from day one, where they will quickly establish and thrive. For keepers wishing to further support their custodians, EarthPro-CustodianFuel can be used.
This all-natural substrate blend includes a volcanic source of minerals and amino acids. This composition helps to create the perfect scrubland or prairie environment by maintaining natural levels of humidity beneath a dry surface layer, while also promoting excellent drainage.

Bio-Active is the term used to describe a live ecosystem. These systems have become extremely popular in recent years and for good reason. Bio-Active systems not only look better to the keeper, but they also provide enrichment and essential vitamin, mineral and gut flora benefits to the live occupants of the vivaria.
Bio-Active systems are typically live-planted, and these plants require appropriate nutrition, water, airflow, and light to flourish. Using the Arcadia Jungle Dawn LED Plant Growth System will significantly increase light levels and PAR within the enclosure, encouraging healthy and sustained plant growth.
A ‘clean-up crew’ of microfauna can be easily sourced and added to EarthMix substrates. These small invertebrates help to turn and aerate the soil while converting animal waste into accessible plant nutrients. We recommend adding three tubs of springtails to a 2–4 ft wide enclosure on day one, followed by one additional pot per month thereafter.
Arcadia Reptile EarthMix-Arid has been extensively tested for safety. In fact, when ingested in small amounts, as occurs naturally in the wild through geophagy, it can provide essential full-spectrum vitamins and minerals. However, it is vital that we look to emulate the natural environments of the animals we keep. By providing heat and light, including UVB, to wild-appropriate levels as part of the light and shade method, alongside good naturalism and varied feeding, keepers can make small but positive changes to care that can have a significant positive impact on animal welfare.
Sick, recovering, or very elderly animals should not be housed in Bio-Active systems without prior veterinary advice.
